4th Grade

Welcome to 4th Grade at Noah Webster Schools!

We have a spectacular journey ahead of us! In addition to the core subjects of reading, writing, and math, your child will have the opportunity to learn about the early development and colonization of the regions and cultures of the Americas and many intriguing topics in our science curriculum. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and participate in fun, yet challenging coursework in his or her classroom. 4th grade students will be more involved than ever when learning about various subjects. From conducting physical experiments to solving problems through constructive group work, your child will experience it all!

Each school year, 4th graders encounter exciting endeavors outside of the classroom by attending scheduled field trips. Field trips are a time for our students to recognize the connection between the curriculum, subjects and topics learned in the classroom and the real word. While field trips have varied over the past few years, 4th grade field trips have previously included taking students to the Arizona Museum of Natural History, ASU-School of Earth and Space Exploration, Goldfield Ghosttown, Arizona Capital, and Pueblo Grand Museum.

4th Grade Curriculum

Math

Through Noah Webster’s comprehensive curriculum, Reveal Math from McGraw-Hill, your child will start learning more complex ways to solve math equations. They will develop a comprehensive understanding when using the four math operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. During instructional time with the teacher, students will add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers 0-20 and solve equations with missing numbers by multiplying and dividing. Students will also learn how to multiply multi-digit numbers by two-digit numbers and divide multi-digit numbers by a single-digit number. Additionally, students will become familiar with identifying and solving equations containing fractions and their equivalencies. Students will also work with geometric vocabulary and be given strategies to solve for the various components of given shapes including area, perimeter, side lengths, and angles, etc. Major standards covered in fourth grade include:

Multi-digit Multiplication
Long division of multi-digit numbers by one-digit
Geometry including vocabulary and formulas
Fraction identification, equivalence, and solving equations
Multi-step word problems

Language Arts

Our 4th grade language arts curriculum teaches students a range of skills through all aspects of the English literature through our comprehensive Wonders reading curriculum from McGraw-Hill. Language arts involves the development of comprehensive skills covering reading, writing, grammar, spelling and vocabulary. Your child will study and develop the fundamentals of language arts by learning the strategies needed to comprehend literary and expository text, formulate paragraphs by focusing on a specific reason for writing and increase their level of fluency and expression.

Reading

Teachers will use different works of literature to enhance your child’s reading ability and meet the required 4th grade reading standards. Utilizing McGraw-Hill reading, your child will begin learning all the elements that make up literary and expository text. Based on the stories students read, they will make predictions, draw conclusions, identify the main idea, identify theme, make inferences, and form generalizations. Our 4th grade students will also learn different methods of summarizing a story, such as conducting judgments and decisions, determining the cause and effect, and comparing and contrasting different parts of the story. Your child will participate in class activities and a weekly story reading to help enhance their comprehension skills in both reading quietly to themselves and aloud to others. Emphasized reading skills in the fourth grade include:

Summarizing a text by identifying the main idea and supporting details
Identify underlying themes in a story
Make inferences and predictions based on what a text explicitly says
Provide text-evidence support in determining an author’s claim
Identifying the organization of how a text is structured

Writing

Our 4th graders will expand upon their previous learned knowledge of the basics of writing into the various styles of writing. They are taught the foundation of descriptive and detailed five paragraph writing to prepare them for creating their own forms of literature. Your child will utilize thinking maps and color coding activities to help organize parts of the writing process. Once the students learn the basics of forming a proper paragraph and all the components that guarantee fluency, they will learn a variety of writing genres, including:

Narrative
Letter writing
Research
Poetry
Expository
Persuasive
Literary response
Response to text

Social Studies

As a 4th grader at Noah Webster Schools, your child will learn about The regions and cultures of the Americas (North, Central, and South America along with the Caribbean Islands) Up to 1763. Our students will begin to explore the world by learning disciplinary skills and processes, civics, economics, geography, history.

Science

The 4th grade science curriculum combines a series of lessons, experiments, and worksheets, along with direct instruction for multiple topics involving Physical, Earth and Space, and Life Sciences. The topics will more specifically cover the general understanding of electricity, weather and climate, environmental changes, magnets, technology, and adaptions.

Your child will learn how to formulate conclusions based on trends, make predictions from a project’s results, and create new questions and predictions using science experiments and fun activities.

Technology

At Noah Webster Schools, we understand the importance of a technologically balanced education, which is why our 4th grade students will have the ability to work with advanced technologies. Noah Webster Schools provides students and teachers with Smartboards, class set laptops, document cameras, and Qwizdom remotes. All core academic curriculum subjects incorporate digital components for both teachers and students. These digital components enhance both the learning and retention of new skills and information.

Specials

Physical Education

All students participate in physical education classes at least once a week. Classes focus on competency of motor skills and performance of physical activities in order to achieve and maintain health-enhancing levels of fitness. Positive social interaction is embedded into instruction while promoting the value of physical activity.

Music

All students participate in music classes at least once a week. Students create meaning and expression through the use of listening, performing and improvisational skills. Students are introduced to the elements and theory of music and musical instruments.

Library

Students will have scheduled library visits where they have the opportunity to select and check out grade appropriate books. Reference materials are also available.

Art

Noah Webster Schools has implemented Art Masterpiece to introduce artists and styles from diverse cultures and time periods. Students are taught to use classic and modern techniques in order to create artwork to communicate ideas, meanings, and/or purposes.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year! The fourth-grade teaching team would like to welcome you to fourth grade. We look forward to meeting you at Open House prior to the first day of school. At Open House you will be able to find out who your child’s teacher is and meet them. Open House is also a time when you can learn about other activities and services provided by the school such as transportation, food services, aftercare, and after school programs. Stay tuned for more information via email regarding Open House.

Below you will find the supply list for 4^th grade. If your teacher needs additional items, they will inform you throughout the school year. In addition, prior to sending in any items not listed on the supply list, please check with your child’s teacher.

Please remember to label all of your student’s personal belongings (jacket, water bottle, backpack, and lunch box) with first and last name. This will help locate them should items become misplaced.

On the first day of school, while I was walking down the hall, I was kind of nervous because it was a new school. But when I walked in the classroom, I recognized some people I already knew, and that made me feel a bit better.

I have learned so many things this year, such as integers, Ancient Greece, and oxymorons. I have also learned things that will help me be a better person. I learned that respect is one of the most important qualities to have in life. My teacher is wonderful. She has empathy (most of the time) for us. She knows what it’s like to be in different kinds of situations, she knows how to cheer someone up, or make them feel regretful (when we misbehave). She understands our problems and gives us advice on how to solve them, whether it’s from personal problems to math or reading problems.

We went on a lot of field trips this year. My favorite one was the Water Day field trip at the Mesa Campus! We got to go on different water slides. I had so much fun sliding down the 40 foot tall Rhino slide and high-fiving everyone when I reached the bottom!

Everyday has been a different day, which I enjoy. I will always remember my experience in 6th grade here at Noah Webster Schools.
