Welcome to 5th Grade at Noah Webster Schools!

5th grade at Noah Webster Schools has a rich curriculum and we are excited to share it with you and your child. We are going to reach for the moon; it will be an exciting and memorable time! As 5th grade students begin the upper elementary years, Noah Webster provides a departmentalized learning model. Each 5^th grade teacher teaches a core subject while the students rotate through the classrooms for each of the core academic subjects similar to a junior high/middle school.

Our goal is to work hard for you and ensure that our program exceeds the standard. It will be challenging and fun. Because we believe in each child’s uniqueness and abilities, your child will be expected to excel. Ultimately, parents, students, and teachers working together creates a truly independent, successful student!

As a part of the learning experience at Noah Webster Schools, 5th grade students step away from the traditional classroom setting and discover a new way of learning by attending scheduled field trips. The field trips align with the overall curriculum and subjects learned in the classroom to the outside world and real life experiences. Our 5th grade field trips vary year to year, but have included chaperoned trips to the Arizona Science Center & Planetarium and JA Biztown.

5th Grade Curriculum

Math

In 5th grade math, our students will use our comprehensive math curriculum, Reveal Math by McGraw-Hill, to apply previous knowledge to solve real world problems and gain new skills through direct instruction by learning;

Measurement and data

Operations and algebraic thinking
Number and operations in base ten
Number and operations – fractions

Language Arts

In 5th grade language arts, your child will use our comprehensive reading curriculum, Wonders from McGraw-Hill, to learn a range of skills that improve their familiarity with the English literature. Each teacher at Noah Webster Schools works with the students to further their previous learned knowledge in all areas of language arts which includes the study of reading, writing, grammar, spelling and vocabulary. The lesson plan will advance your child’s current understanding of the basic fundamentals of language arts by learning:

Craft and structure
Integration of knowledge and ideas
Range of reading and level of text complexity
Comprehension and collaboration
Conventions of standard English
Vocabulary acquisition and use

Reading

Our teachers utilize different works of literature to progress your child’s comprehension skills for them to meet the 5th grade reading standards. Your child will learn how to process descriptive text and narratives through McGraw-Hill reading and other selective stories in order to:

Identify the main character
Recognize the problem and solution
Summarize the text in order to draw an ending conclusion
Make predictions
Draw inferences
Create their own judgments and decisions about significant events
Use Text Evidence

Teachers will also work with the students to improve their skills when reading aloud. This involves word accuracy, appropriate pacing and understanding. Your child will build the required reading and comprehensive skills to enhance their ability to analyze more complex literature.

Writing

In 5th grade, our teachers will work with students using Write from Beginning curriculum which utilizes Thinking Maps to help students organize information. Students will formulate a plan for writing in different text types for various purposes.

Social Studies

5^th Grade students will understand the history of the United States within an integrated approach. Disciplinary skills and processes will be used to examine change and continuity over time, multiple perspectives, using and understanding sources, and cause and effect. Focus will be on historic and economic events from the American Revolution to Industrialism (including the Constitutional Convention, westward expansion, Civil War and Reconstruction, and key political, economic and social figures involved). Students will also learn about the creation of the Constitution and the principles within the document (including the Articles of Confederation, Bill of Right) and the influence of immigration.

Science

Students will understand and follow the scientific method by learning to: analyze and interpret data, plan and carry out investigations, construct an explanation, obtain, analyze and communicate evidence, define problems and design solutions.

5th grade curriculum focuses on Physical Science (matter and energy), Earth and Space Science (composition of Earth and its atmosphere, solar system, galaxy and universe), Life Science (organisms, cells, genetic information, unity and diversity of organisms, extinct and living organisms).

During your child’s 5th grade year, students are required to complete a science fair project where they will demonstrate their understanding of the scientific method.

Technology

At Noah Webster Schools, we understand the importance of a technologically balanced education, which is why our 5th grade students will have the ability to work with advanced technologies. Noah Webster Schools provides students and teachers with Smartboards, class set laptops, document cameras, and Qwizdom remotes. All core academic curriculum subjects incorporate digital components for both teachers and students. These digital components enhance both the learning and retention of new skills and information.

Specials

Physical Education

All students participate in physical education classes at least once a week. Classes focus on competency of motor skills and performance of physical activities in order to achieve and maintain health-enhancing levels of fitness. Positive social interaction is embedded into instruction while promoting the value of physical activity.

Music

All students participate in music classes at least once a week. Students create meaning and expression through the use of listening, performing and improvisational skills. Students are introduced to the elements and theory of music and musical instruments. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the free band and orchestra program.

Library

Students will have scheduled library visits where they have the opportunity to select and check out grade appropriate books. Reference materials are also available.

Art

Noah Webster Schools has implemented Art Masterpiece to introduce artists and styles from diverse cultures and time periods. Students are taught to use classic and modern techniques in order to create artwork to communicate ideas, meanings, and/or purposes.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year! The fifth-grade teaching team would like to welcome you to fifth grade. We look forward to meeting you at Open House prior to the first day of school. At Open House you will be able to find out who your child’s teacher is and meet them. Open House is also a time when you can learn about other activities and services provided by the school such as transportation, food services, aftercare, and after school programs. Stay tuned for more information via email regarding Open House.

Below you will find the supply list for 5^th grade. If your teacher needs additional items, they will inform you throughout the school year. In addition, prior to sending in any items not listed on the supply list, please check with your child’s teacher.

Please remember to label all of your student’s personal belongings (jacket, water bottle, backpack, and lunch box) with first and last name. This will help locate them should items become misplaced.

This is a general combined supply list for 5th Grade at both campuses. Your child’s teacher may have important class specific items that they will ask for at Open House.

On the first day of school, while I was walking down the hall, I was kind of nervous because it was a new school. But when I walked in the classroom, I recognized some people I already knew, and that made me feel a bit better.

I have learned so many things this year, such as integers, Ancient Greece, and oxymorons. I have also learned things that will help me be a better person. I learned that respect is one of the most important qualities to have in life. My teacher is wonderful. She has empathy (most of the time) for us. She knows what it’s like to be in different kinds of situations, she knows how to cheer someone up, or make them feel regretful (when we misbehave). She understands our problems and gives us advice on how to solve them, whether it’s from personal problems to math or reading problems.

We went on a lot of field trips this year. My favorite one was the Water Day field trip at the Mesa Campus! We got to go on different water slides. I had so much fun sliding down the 40 foot tall Rhino slide and high-fiving everyone when I reached the bottom!

Everyday has been a different day, which I enjoy. I will always remember my experience in 6th grade here at Noah Webster Schools.

The students here are all friends; there isn’t anyone who doesn’t feel welcomed. Everyone is nice to each other and treats each other the same. No one is different.
