1st Grade

Welcome to 1st Grade at Noah Webster Schools!

Get ready for a fun and exciting year! Your child will have a blast as they continue to grow and learn each and every week. Students will begin developing their own methods of learning and familiarizing themselves with the 1st grade environment. Students will enjoy coming to school every day, seeing their teachers and friends, and working hands-on with some of the latest technologies. Although they may seem like beginners, our 1st grade students are expected to work diligently to prepare for a smooth transition into the next grade, while having fun in the classroom and working with others! Each school year, the 1st graders at Noah Webster Schools will venture outside of the classroom and away from campus to attend scheduled field trips. All field trips will align with the curriculum and complement a specific subject, topic or course the students are learning at that time. While field trips often vary from year to year, some past 1st grade field trips have included trips to the Phoenix Zoo, Phoenix Children’s Museum, and Vertuccio’s Farm.

1st Grade Curriculum

Math

Noah Webster implements Reveal Math by McGraw-Hill for it’s comprehensive math curriculum. Students will begin learning more complex arithmetic such as addition and subtraction in word problems (eventually including three whole numbers), adding and subtracting numbers 0-20, subtracting numbers in groups of 10, and double digit addition. Students will also learn how to find 10 more and 10 less of a number, place value, fractions, true/false equations, and solve greater than, less than, and equal to equations. This is the year when your child will begin to learn a variety of new mathematical subjects, including:

Properties of operation
Fact families
AB patterns
Graphing
Time
Money
Expressing the length of an object and ordering three objects by length
Composing two or three dimensional shapes and composing new shapes
Defining attributes of a shape
Our 1st grade students will also learn to count all the way up to, and backwards from, 200.

Language Arts

This year, your child’s language arts studies will focus on reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and spelling using McGraw-Hill’s Wonders comprehensive Language Arts curriculum.

Reading

Phonics is the foundation to reading so students will spend time mastering their foundational phonics skills such as beginning, middle, end sounds, long and short vowel sounds, vowel teams, consonant blends, and digraphs. Then they will apply those skills in their reading. In 1st grade, students will work on their overall reading comprehension as well as learning to:

Define story elements
Find main idea of a story
Draw conclusions
Sequence
Summarize
Identify fiction and non-fiction
Text Evidence

Writing

Students will develop their writing skills through “Write from the Beginning,” which teaches students the various traits of effective writing. Your child will complete exercises in which they are required to write personal narratives, expository writing, and persuasive writing. Students will be writing between 3-5 sentences to include a topic sentence and closing sentence. They will also begin to use transition words to help their writing flow. Students will also use text and form a written response.

Social Studies

In 1^st grade Social Studies, students use Studies Weekly to learn about how a community functions and how each member contributes to the community though a variety of topics including being a responsible citizen. They also learn about American symbols, monuments, and traditions.

Science

In Science, students will be introduced to science tools and learn the importance of science safety. The class will also partake in the science fair where they will learn about the scientific method. They will learn about a variety topics including Earth and weather, living organisms (plant and animal), and space.

Technology

At Noah Webster Schools, we understand the importance of a technologically balanced education, which is why our 1st grade students will have the ability to work with advanced technologies. Noah Webster Schools provides students and teachers with Smartboards, class set laptops, document cameras, and Qwizdom remotes. All core academic curriculum subjects incorporate digital components for both teachers and students. These digital components enhance both the learning and retention of new skills and information.

Specials

Physical Education

All students participate in physical education classes at least once a week. Classes focus on competency of motor skills and performance of physical activities in order to achieve and maintain health-enhancing levels of fitness. Positive social interaction is embedded into instruction while promoting the value of physical activity.

Music

All students participate in music classes at least once a week. Students create meaning and expression through the use of listening, performing and improvisational skills. Students are introduced to the elements and theory of music and musical instruments.

Library

Students will have scheduled library visits where they have the opportunity to select and check out grade appropriate books. Reference materials are also available.

Art

Noah Webster Schools has implemented Art Masterpiece to introduce artists and styles from diverse cultures and time periods. Students are taught to use classic and modern techniques in order to create artwork to communicate ideas, meanings, and/or purposes.

1st Grade Supply List

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year! The first-grade teaching team would like to welcome you to first grade. We look forward to meeting you at Open House prior to the first day of school. At Open House you will be able to find out who your child’s teacher is and meet them. Open House is also a time when you can learn about other activities and services provided by the school such as transportation, food services, aftercare, and after school programs. Stay tuned for more information via email regarding Open House.

Below you will find the supply list for 1^st grade. If your teacher needs additional items, they will inform you throughout the school year. In addition, prior to sending in any items not listed on the supply list, please check with your child’s teacher.

Please remember to label all of your student’s personal belongings (jacket, water bottle, backpack, and lunch box) with first and last name. This will help locate them should items become misplaced.

On the first day of school, while I was walking down the hall, I was kind of nervous because it was a new school. But when I walked in the classroom, I recognized some people I already knew, and that made me feel a bit better.

I have learned so many things this year, such as integers, Ancient Greece, and oxymorons. I have also learned things that will help me be a better person. I learned that respect is one of the most important qualities to have in life. My teacher is wonderful. She has empathy (most of the time) for us. She knows what it’s like to be in different kinds of situations, she knows how to cheer someone up, or make them feel regretful (when we misbehave). She understands our problems and gives us advice on how to solve them, whether it’s from personal problems to math or reading problems.

We went on a lot of field trips this year. My favorite one was the Water Day field trip at the Mesa Campus! We got to go on different water slides. I had so much fun sliding down the 40 foot tall Rhino slide and high-fiving everyone when I reached the bottom!

Everyday has been a different day, which I enjoy. I will always remember my experience in 6th grade here at Noah Webster Schools.

I’ve made so many memories this year and I will always remember them. The best memory I have is just coming to Noah Webster Schools; knowing that I really enjoy going to school and not complaining about it in the morning. We had a lot of field trips and they were all amazing! This is the best school I’ve ever been too! I’ve learned so much more than at any other school.

The students here are all friends; there isn’t anyone who doesn’t feel welcomed. Everyone is nice to each other and treats each other the same. No one is different.
